I decided to start the blog to sharpen my rusty Mandarin. I notice that my current difficulties are mostly in vocabularies. In a sense that I have a solid grasp of the grammar, but stumbled upon unfamiliar terms.

It was like this when I was watching news broadcast on a Chinese TV station: “Our president (just quoting the news, my actual president is SBY, lol), Hu Jintao held a meeting with the prime minister to discuss about blah3.. due to emerging economic crisis that has affected the People’s Republic of China. The result of the meeting will be blah3 to be discussed further on blah blah blah.”

Basically, I get the main point, the person who does the action, the action itself, and the whole structure of the news, but lose most of the meaty details.

It’s like “XXX does XXX to XXX because XXX”,

????

lol. yeah anyhow, I have made commitment to stop procrastinating and being lazy and start to grab some exceprts from news, articles, paragraphs each day and really look it up, really understand and digest the meaning. I hope I can increase my working vocabularies in Mandarin because I don’t want to let my native tongue go to waste like that.

duh gw bener2 ADD nih, wkwkwk… ADD yang muncul justru pas udah gede, ADD yg diciptakan sendiri. I just can’t slow down, must be active all the time. i am active but not productive.

buka file ini satu, tracing2, ketemu yg lain, tracing lagi, akhirnya udah jauhh dari titik awalnya, dan blom figure out the one thing that got me start out at the first place.
for instance, right now, i am:
opening 11 files in PSPad
reading “the confident speaker”
ocasionally checking the virus scan progress
checking fring on my cell
organizing my downloaded items folder
and my mind is wandering off around different subjects and projects like (…edited…).
argh.

slow.down.

i know all about the importance of focus, 80/20 rules, time management, prioritizing, but it seems like this just gets worse than before i even learn about those concepts.

nih, tambah satu lagi. gw baru buka pdf “the vault guide to schmoozing”.
mari kita analisa:
gw merasa gak produktif, jadi mulai mencari sesuatu utk dikerjakan. setengah jalan, gw gak sabaran, mulai bosan, ngantuk, gak konsen. buka yang lain, setengah jalan gw udah divide attention ke dua hal, sambil otak masih keluyuran ke hal2 lain. buka lagi, and so on.

ini gw kayaknya gak konsen karena nungguin AVG selesai scanning, trus mau restart, biar start fresh, sekalian ngecek apa problem persists. jadi mau ngerjain apa2 tuh gak konsen karena takut break in the flow pas harus restart. gw aware dengan semua itu, but still, i do it anyway. why? does it make me feel good? yes, for a while. does it make me feel bad? yes, in the long term.

so, how?

the art of clear thinking bagus, tipe2 buku yg gw suka. menjelaskan “mengapa”, and “bagaimana” pikiran bekerja. good food for conceptualist like me. haha, giving myself a label again.

lagi nyobain seagull nih, damn it’s slow. perhaps because i am also running a virus scan at the background. duh jadi ancur. lemot abis. apache sampe restart2. gw testing buka joomla n magento juga sih, hihi
anyway, I think seagull is slow because of its heavy use of templates. everything is in template, which must be rendered and parsed

Akhirnya? over engineering. think too much, cannot make decision.

I have told myself over and over again, “I cannot have ALL information I need and then make the BEST decision”

Ibaratnya supir taksi yang hapal mati jalanan jakarta, jalan besar, alternatif, tikus2, pintas, dan jalan2 lainnya.

Penumpang A masuk ke taksinya, minta diantar ke senen. Dalam kepala si supir taksi yang menderita analysis paralysis terjadi dialog spt ini:

“senen yah, hmmm… itu bisa lewat xxx, tp muter dikit. kalo dari arah yyy bisa langsung, agak macet sih. apa lewat abc ya? lebih jauh tapi lancar. ah, bensin udah segini lagi. apa gw isi dulu? pom bensin di deket mana ya yang enak. duh kalo gw ke pom bensin yg itu, gw harus lewat zzz dong. dari situ bisa tembus ke xxx sih. gimana enaknya ya?”

Doeehhh, cape deee….. just pick one and get going already!

to save time in the future. over engineering, spending too much time planning for things that might not even happen

hahaha good lesson. success is not just a binary switch away, ideas are not everything. Yet it is not also about execution. Ten people might have the same idea, 3 might have pursued it, and perhaps only one will succeed. pursue/not. it’s not that simple

I remembered reading this article at readwriteweb about how most internet users nowadays don’t know how to use the address bar. and in the discussion of the article, some readers suggest possiblity that in the future, address bar and search box will become one. ‘one box rules it all’

Now, looks like Google has picked it up. And i think by default, it eliminates the role of address bar. it IS a search bar. a Google search bar. And this means practically every address and queries we enter in ‘the box’ will first go through google’s data center, then we get redirected to the actual landing page.

i think it has been going on with google toolbar. but this is more explicit and at your face.
i admire the usability folks at google. they are the master behind all google’s simple, flow-inducing, intuitive design.
ajaxify everything, javascript rules at the web2.0. Not a single incompability problem now :p
